Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain — Timing, Permits and Rules

Bhasma Aarti is the best known ritual at the Mahakaleshwar temple and is performed at no other Jyotirlinga. It takes place every day in the Brahma Muhurat, long before sunrise. Attending requires a permit issued in advance by the temple committee. This page is for information only — permits come from the temple's official process, not from us.

At a glance

Timings, fees and the permit process are set by the temple committee and change from time to time. On Shravan Mondays, Mahashivratri and Nag Panchami the arrangements differ, and permits may be limited or suspended. Confirm against the official announcement before planning travel.

What Bhasma Aarti is

Bhasma Aarti is the first aarti of the day at Mahakaleshwar. Sacred ash is offered to the Shivling to the sound of conch and damru while the city is still asleep. Mahakal is regarded as the lord of time, and the ash stands for the idea that everything is reduced to ash in the end.

Tradition associates the ash with a funeral pyre. The bhasma used at the temple today is prepared through a prescribed process from cow-dung cakes and other sacred materials.

Why it happens only here

Mahakaleshwar is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga of the twelve, and in Ujjain Mahakal is regarded as the king of the city. The Bhasma Aarti tradition is not observed at any other Jyotirlinga, which is why devotees travel to Ujjain for this ritual alone.

How permits work

The number of people who can attend is limited each day, so entry is by advance permit only. Permits are issued by the Shree Mahakaleshwar Mandir Prabandh Samiti.

Dress code and rules

Traditional dress is required for those seated in the sanctum or Nandi Hall — dhoti for men, saree for women. Women are asked to observe a veil during the offering of the bhasma.

Mobile phones, cameras, leather items and bags are not allowed inside and must be left in the lockers outside. Photography and video of the aarti are not permitted.

What the morning is like

Permit holders need to arrive well before the aarti; queues begin forming in the last hours of the night, and security checks and entry take time.

Staying in Ujjain the previous night is the practical approach, since arriving that early is otherwise difficult. During Shravan and around Mahashivratri the crowds multiply.

Beware of fake booking websites

Several websites and agents claim to sell "guaranteed" Bhasma Aarti permits at high prices. Permits are issued only by the temple committee, and the official fee is nominal. Be cautious before paying any third party.

To be explicit: mahakalpooja.in does not issue or book Bhasma Aarti permits. We arrange poojas only. If anyone asks you for a permit fee in our name, they are not connected with us.

If you cannot travel to Ujjain

Attending Bhasma Aarti requires being present; it cannot be performed on your behalf. Poojas such as Rudrabhishek and Mahamrityunjaya Jaap can, however, be performed by a poojari in your name, gotra and sankalp.
