Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2026 falls on Saturday, 10 October. It is the last and most important day of Pitru Paksha. Every ancestor whose tithi is not known is remembered on this day. In Ujjain the rite is performed at Siddhavat, on the bank of the Shipra.
It is also called Mahalaya Amavasya and Pitru Visarjani Amavasya. Of the sixteen days of Pitru Paksha this is the one on which all the ancestors of a family may be remembered together — which is what sarva pitru means.
The Amavasya tithi begins and ends at different times in different places, so confirm against the panchang for your city. The rite is usually performed at midday, in the Kutup period.
On each day of Pitru Paksha the shradh is for ancestors who passed on that tithi. But many families do not know the tithi, and for others that day has already gone by.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya is for all of them. That is why it is the busiest day of the fortnight — the ghats in Ujjain are fuller on this day than on any other.
Tarpan and pind daan begin at Siddhavat from early morning. After bathing in the Shipra, water is offered to the ancestors and the pindas are given.
Pitra Dosh shanti, Tripindi Shradh and Narayan Bali are also performed on this day. For families where these rites were left undone, it is considered the most fitting day of the year.
It is the last day of Pitru Paksha and the most crowded. Poojaris are booked out for this single day several days in advance.
Giving the name and gotra of the departed at the point of booking lets the poojari prepare the sankalp beforehand. Booking is free and the confirmation reaches you by email straight away.
Pitru Paksha ends with Sarva Pitru Amavasya, and Sharadiya Navratri begins the next day.
This is why the auspicious occasions set aside during Pitru Paksha are considered auspicious again from the day after.
